Etymology
Carbonyl comes from carbon, from the Latin carbo which means 'coal', and the ending -yl meaning a 'part' or 'group'. So a carbonyl group is literally a carbon 'part' of a molecule, and in chemistry this name is used for the carbon atom joined to an oxygen atom.
