Etymology
Capoeira comes from a Portuguese word for a 'thicket' or 'patch of scrub', probably borrowed from an indigenous Brazilian language. Enslaved Africans in Brazil developed a dance-like fighting practice near those bushes, with music and acrobatics, so the martial art kept the name of the place where it began.
