Etymology
Buggery comes from an old name for people from Bulgaria, and in Middle English it was used for a religious group who were accused of 'unnatural' sexual acts. It is related to the common English word bugger, and that's why buggery came to mean 'anal intercourse' and was often treated as a crime.
