The term is built transparently from bio- and technology, but the specialized scientific sense is not fully predictable from the parts alone.
Etymology
Biotechnology combines the part bio- ('life'), as in biology or biography, with technology ('tools or methods for making things'). So biotechnology is about using living things as tools or systems to make useful products like medicines and food.
