Bankruptcy comes from the old Italian phrase banca rotta, where banca means 'bench' and rotta means 'broken'. Long ago people who worked with money sat at a bench and if they could not pay, people would break the bench to show the business had failed; this is also the root of the English word bank, so bankruptcy means you cannot pay your debts.
