Etymology
The word bain-marie comes from French words bain ('bath') and Marie ('Mary'). One popular story says it was named for an early inventor called Maria who used a water 'bath' to heat things slowly, so a bain-marie is a hot water 'bath' for gentle cooking and keeping food warm.
