Etymology
The word backpacker comes from back ('the back of the body') and pack ('a bag you carry'), so it literally means someone who carries a backpack. A helpful image is a traveler walking with one bag on their back for long or adventurous trips, which is why a backpacker usually carries their belongings in one bag while they travel.
