The word asbestos comes from a Greek word that means 'inextinguishable', made from a- meaning 'not' and a root meaning 'to put out'. So asbestos is a very heat-resistant mineral that was used to stop fires and protect buildings, which is why it was useful but is now known to be dangerous to breathe.
