Etymology
Arctic for an overshoe comes from the same source as the name of the cold region: the old Greek word arktos meaning 'bear', because people named the north after bear-shaped stars. Because 'Arctic' means very cold and snowy, these waterproof overshoes were called arctics since they protect your feet in that kind of weather.
