The connection to nautical 'port' is real, but the directional adverbial prefix 'a-' is not very productive for most learners, so the meaning is only partly inferable.

Etymology

Aport comes from the old sea phrase a- + port, meaning 'to the port' or 'toward the harbour side'. So aport means 'toward the left' of a ship when you face forward, because port is the ship's left or harbour side.
