Etymology

Apathetic comes from the Greek parts a- meaning 'not' and pathos meaning 'feeling', and it is the same root as in sympathy and empathy. So an apathetic person is 'not feeling' much interest or emotion, which is why the word means showing little or no care or enthusiasm.
