Etymology

Amniocentesis comes from two parts: amnio- meaning 'amniotic sac' or the baby's 'water', and -centesis meaning 'to puncture and remove fluid'. So amniocentesis is a medical procedure where a needle takes some of the fluid around the baby for testing.
