Etymology
The word agarose comes from agar, the jelly made from seaweed and originally called 'agar-agar' in Malay, and the ending -ose, which often means 'sugar'. So agarose is a sugar-like jelly from seaweed that labs use as a gel to separate DNA and proteins.
