Morphology

across = cross (semi-transparent) = a + cross

The link to 'cross' is recognizable, but the prefixed adverbial pattern with 'a-' is not productive for most learners.

Etymology

Across comes from the old prefix a- meaning 'on' or 'in' plus cross, from the idea of a line or mark that goes from one side to the other. So to go across something is to go 'from one side to the other'.
