Etymology

The word YFLOPS breaks into Y and FLOPS. Y is short for yotta, which means '10²⁴', a septillion, and FLOPS means 'floating-point operations per second', the many tiny math steps a computer does. So, YFLOPS tells how many of those tiny math steps a machine can do in one second, and the yotta part shows the number is extremely large.
