Morphology

Wednesday = Woden + day (opaque) = wednes + day

Although 'day' is a transparent element, the first element ('Wednes' from the deity Woden) is archaic and not a productive modern morpheme, so learners cannot derive the meaning.

Etymology

Wednesday comes from the Old English god Woden, the same figure called Odin in Norse stories. It originally meant 'Woden's day', which is why the name literally names the day after that god.
