Etymology
Turkestan comes from Turk, the name of the people who lived there long ago, and the Persian ending -stan, which means 'land' and also appears in country names like Pakistan and Afghanistan. So Turkestan simply means 'land of the Turks', which is why it names that historical region of Central Asia.
