Morphology
The meaning 'the southeastern region of Asia' is directly and compositionally built from 'southeast' (a compass/region term) + 'Asia' (the continent). This compass-direction + place-name construction is a common, cross-linguistic pattern and thus readily inferable by a B1 learner who knows both constituents.
Etymology
Southeast Asia comes from the directions south and east plus Asia. Imagine a map where this part of Asia sits to the south and east of China and India, so the name means the 'countries in that area', like Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
