Somali comes from the name the people use for themselves, Soomaali, and so it refers to the land and culture of those people. A helpful way to remember this is a folk idea that links soo 'come' and maal 'milk', or the ancestor name Samaale, which is why Somali means 'relating to Somalia, its people, or its culture'.
