Etymology

Shaaban comes from the Arabic sha'ban, which means 'to spread out' or 'to separate'. A helpful way to remember this is that people once scattered to look for water before the holy month, so Shaaban is the month just before Ramadan and a time when many begin to prepare for fasting.
