Etymology
Salonica is an older English name for Thessaloniki, coming from the way people in Turkish and other local languages pronounced the city's name, for example Selanik or Salónica. The Greek name Thessaloniki contains the part -nike which means 'victory', so Salonica is simply another local form of the same name.
