Surface Forms
Etymology
SSRI stands for the parts selective, serotonin, reuptake, inhibitor; here serotonin is a brain chemical that helps mood, reuptake means 'taking back', and inhibitor means 'blocker'. A helpful image is to think of an SSRI as a small gate that stops serotonin being taken back so more of the 'mood' chemical stays in the brain, which is why SSRIs are used to treat depression.
