Etymology

Ranales comes from the plant name Ranunculus, which comes from Latin rana meaning 'frog' plus the ending -unculus that makes 'little', so Ranunculus means 'little frog'. Many plants in this old order grow in wet places, so the name Ranales was used for a group of flowering plants often found near water.
