Etymology

Rainier is the name of a mountain that a British explorer gave to his friend, a British officer called Peter Rainier, so the name comes from a person, not from 'rain' the weather. Local Native people called the mountain Tahoma or Tacoma, meaning 'mother of waters' or 'snow-covered mountain', which helps you remember it is a very high, snowy peak.
