Etymology

Pyrenees probably comes from a Greek name Pyrene, and one popular story links the mountains to her; the Greek root pyr means 'fire', like in the English word pyre, so a helpful way to remember it is to think of 'Pyrene's mountains' or 'mountains of fire'. That's why Pyrenees is the name for the long mountain range between France and Spain.
