Etymology
Psalms comes from the Greek psalmos, a 'song for a string instrument', from the verb psallein, 'to pluck'. These were songs of 'praise' and the Hebrew title Tehillim even means 'praises', so the book called Psalms is a collection of religious songs and poems.
