Etymology
OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode, where organic means 'made from carbon-based materials', light-emitting means 'gives off light', and diode is a small electronic part that lets electricity make light. So an OLED screen makes its own light and does not need a backlight, which is why these displays can be very thin and show bright colors.
