Etymology

Nuytsia is the scientific name of the Western Australian Christmas tree and comes from the Dutch family name Nuyts, after the 17th-century sailor Pieter Nuyts who visited the coast. So the plant keeps his name today, which is why the bright, orange-flowering tree is called Nuytsia.
