The name is transparently composed of the direction 'North' and the place name 'Korea', so its meaning as the country occupying the northern part of the Korean Peninsula is directly derivable from the constituents. Etymology
North Korea comes from joining North and Korea after Korea was divided. After World War II the northern area became its own country in 1948, so the name means the 'northern' part of Korea.
