Etymology

Nidaros comes from the river name Nida, the river now called Nidelva, and the ending -os, which means 'river mouth' or 'where a river meets the sea'. So Nidaros is 'the mouth of the Nida', a fitting name for a city and port on the Trondheim Fjord.
