Nasser (the lake) takes its name from the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, and the lake was named after him when the Aswan High Dam made the new lake. The name comes from Arabic Nāṣir, meaning 'helper' or 'victor', so the lake keeps his name as a memory of him.
