Etymology
The word Mumbai comes from the local goddess Mumbā plus the Marathi word aai meaning 'mother', so the name originally meant 'Mother Mumba' and honors the city's local goddess. You may know its older name Bombay, from Portuguese words thought to mean 'good bay', but Mumbai brings the city's name back to the local language and beliefs.
