Mesopotamia comes from the Greek parts meso meaning 'middle' and potamos meaning 'river', so it literally means 'land between rivers'. A helpful way to remember is that potamos is the same 'river' part you see in hippopotamus ('river horse'), which fits because Mesopotamia lies between the Tigris and Euphrates.
