Etymology

Latino comes from Spanish and shares the same root as Latin, from the old Latin word Latinus, meaning 'of Latium', the region around ancient Rome. Because the countries called Latin America speak languages that come from Latin, Latino became a simple name for a person from Latin America, so today it means someone with roots in Latin America.
