Morphology

Kuwait + city

The meaning is directly compositional: 'Kuwait' (the country/proper name) + 'city' (an urban area) yields 'the city of Kuwait', which a learner who knows both words will understand as the principal/urban center. This is a common, cross-linguistically transparent naming pattern for place names, so a B1 learner who knows the constituents will readily infer the intended referent.

Etymology

Kuwait City gets its name from Kuwait, an Arabic word that means 'small fort'. Long ago a little fort by the sea protected fishermen and traders and the place grew into the country's main town and port, so the name stayed.
