Etymology

Kakatoe comes from the Malay word kakaktua, where kakak means 'older sister' and tua means 'old'. European sailors turned that name into kaketoe, and today it is used for the crested parrots we call cockatoos, perhaps because the bird's call or its familiar name sounded like 'kakak'.
