Etymology

Jaffa comes from the old Hebrew name Yaffa, which means 'beautiful', and it was the name of a famous coastal port on the Mediterranean. A helpful image is a 'beautiful' harbour full of ships and fruit, because the sweet Jaffa oranges were named after the city's trade. That's why Jaffa today refers to the historic port city now part of Tel Aviv.
