Morphology
Isurus + glaucus
The name is a taxonomic binomial combining a genus label ('Isurus' = a shark genus) with an epithet that derives from Latin 'glaucus' (glaucous = bluish‑grey). If a learner knows both constituents, the species name is transparently descriptive as ‘the blue‑grey Isurus’ (i.e. a blue‑grey shark). Although 'glaucus' is a rare/Latin form not in many learner dictionaries, the meaning is compositionally recoverable from the parts.
Etymology
Isurus glaucus comes from old Greek words that describe the shark. The first part, Isurus, means 'equal tail' and refers to its even tail fins, and glaucus means 'blue-grey', so the name tells us it is a 'blue-grey' shark.
