Etymology
Hymenophyllum comes from Greek parts hymen- meaning 'membrane' and -phyllum meaning 'leaf', the same 'phyll' you see in chlorophyll. So it literally means 'membrane leaf', which helps explain why these ferns have very thin, almost see-through fronds.
