Etymology

Gymnelis probably comes from the old Greek root gymn- meaning 'naked' or 'bare', the same root as the familiar word gym. A helpful way to remember the name is that many eelpouts in this group have smooth, scaleless, eel-like bodies, so 'naked' fits these long, bottom-dwelling sea fishes.
