Etymology
The word Guru comes from the Sanskrit word guru meaning 'heavy' or 'important'. In India that idea of being 'weighty' became a way to call a respected 'teacher' or 'spiritual leader' who guides others, so the Sikh Gurus are the founding leaders and teachers of the faith.
