Etymology

Guadalupe as a title for the Virgin Mary comes from that Spanish place name, but one popular story says the native Nahuatl word Coatlaxopeuh sounded similar and meant 'she who crushes the serpent', which helps explain why the name became a powerful symbol of protection in Mexico.
