As a proper name/title, 'Garden State' refers to a specific cultural referent (a film and a nickname for New Jersey) that cannot be derived from the literal meanings of 'garden' and 'state.' Etymology
Garden State comes from the idea that New Jersey once had many farms and plant nurseries. People called the region a garden because it grew lots of food and flowers, so the name came to mean the state itself.
