Morphology
Fringilla + montifringilla
This is a scientific binomial: knowing 'Fringilla' (a genus of finches) makes it clear the phrase denotes a particular kind of finch, so part of the meaning is compositional. However the species epithet 'montifringilla' is specialized Latin and does not yield the common name or the bird's distinctive features for a typical B1 learner, so the meaning is only partially predictable.
Etymology
Fringilla montifringilla comes from two Latin parts: Fringilla meaning 'finch' and monti- meaning 'mountain'. So the name gives the image of a small 'mountain finch', which is why it is used for the bird known today as the 'brambling'.
