Formosa comes from the Portuguese word formosa, which means 'beautiful'. Portuguese sailors called Taiwan 'Ilha Formosa', the 'beautiful island'. The Portuguese word comes from Latin forma meaning 'shape', like the English word form, so thinking of a 'beautiful shape' helps remember why the island was named Formosa.
