FORTRAN is an acronym from 'formula' + 'translation' (FOR + TRAN) but the acronymic formation is not a productive morphological process and does not transparently convey 'programming language' to an average learner.
Etymology
FORTRAN comes from combining FORmula and TRANslation, because it was made to 'translate' mathematical 'formulas' into computer code. So, FORTRAN is a programming language many scientists and engineers use for math and science work.
