Etymology

Eleutherodactylus comes from Greek parts eleuthero- 'free' and -dactylus 'finger' or 'toe', a bit like the familiar name pterodactyl. The name points to frogs with 'free' toes (little or no webbing), which fits these small 'robber frogs' that live mostly on land rather than in water.
