Etymology

Edmonton comes from an old English name Eadhelm plus -ton, which means 'farm' or 'settlement'. The -ton part is like the English word 'town'. So Edmonton originally meant 'Eadhelm's farm', which explains why the name belongs to a place that grew into a city.
