The compound is a descriptive place name formed from 'East' + 'River', so a B1 learner who knows both words can reasonably infer it refers to a river or watercourse on the east side (i.e., the East River). Although it is a specific toponym and technically a tidal strait in NYC, its meaning is compositionally transparent and cross-linguistically predictable.
Etymology
East River is named because the water lies to the east of Manhattan and looks like a river. It sits 'between' Manhattan and Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx and is crossed by bridges and ferries, so today the name means that stretch of water.
