Morphology
Callistephus + chinensis
The form is compositional: a genus name (Callistephus, a group of asters) plus a species epithet (chinensis, indicating origin from China) together denote a particular species of plant — i.e. the China aster. However, this relies on knowledge of scientific binomial naming and a Latin-derived epithet, which is not a standard everyday compositional pattern for B1 learners, so the relation is only partly transparent.
Etymology
Callistephus chinensis comes from words where Callistephus means 'beautiful crown' and chinensis means 'from China'. The aster's round, many-petaled flower head looks like a small crown and the plant was first grown in China, so the name points to its look and origin.
